LINE内のキャラクターで有名なのは、お月様のようなまんまるフェイスがキュートな“ムーン”、ポーカーフェイスの“ブラウン”、怒ったり泣いたり笑ったり、気分屋の“コニー”など。もちろんLINEを始めなければ知らないキャラクターだが、2012年8月末に発売したマスコットストラップを皮切りに、フェイスクッション(各2100円)、マスコットストラップPart2(各200円)など、商品を多数展開中だ。
LINEのキャラクターグッズが生まれたきっかけは、タカラトミーアーツの佐藤涼子さんのひらめきから。「LINEは、4月くらいから仕事で使っていました。ある日スタンプを使っていて思ったんです。“これグッズ化したらいいんじゃない？”って」。佐藤さんはすぐに上司にグッズ化を提言、それからわずか1か月後に、ストラップのサンプルが完成、発売まで発展した。
こうして2012年8月末に販売を開始した「LINEキャラクターマスコットストラップ」は、大ヒットを記録。初めて世に出るキャラクターグッズは15万個出ればヒットというガチャ市場で、何と40万個を売り上げる大人気商品になった。
そして2012年秋からは、ぬいぐるみやソフビの販売を開始。「ぬいぐるみも、通常と比べて1桁多いくらいの受注をいただいています。キャラクターのパワーを感じますね」と語るのは、ぬいぐるみ企画部の会 美津代さんだ。表情豊かなLINEのキャラをグッズ化するうえで、最大のポイントは“再現性”。「ぬいぐるみは、綿の詰め具合からブラウンの鼻の位置、コニーの耳の長さまで、細かい部分にも気を配りました」と会さんは話す。

－－山岳ガイドは何をするのですか
太田 １０人、２０人というツアー登山の参加者を連れて歩きながら山行全体の管理をします。具体的には「足場が悪いから気を付けてください」「落石に注意して」「１０分間休憩をとります」「稜線（りょうせん）に出ると風が強いのでここで防寒具を着ましょう」といった指示を出す。山岳ガイドがリーダーとして同行すると、遭難事故がグンと減ります。
－－それはなぜですか
太田 登山は経験がものをいうからです。山登りの経験豊富なリーダーが付いていると、事故の起きる確率が大きく下がる。
－－最近の遭難事故の傾向を教えてください
太田 東京の奥多摩の昨年の事故統計を見ると、道迷いや疲労が目立つ。地図や方位磁石を携行していないから道に迷う。あるいは持っていても地図を読めなかったり、磁石が使えなかったりする。明らかに知識がなく、経験不足です。
－－文部科学省によれば、ハイキングも含めた年間の登山人口は１千万人を超え、まさに登山ブームです
太田 いまは大衆登山の時代。以前は若い人が山岳会に入ってチャレンジしていた。山は魅力的だということで、２０年ほど前からは多くの人々が登山を始め出した。ここ数年はさらに山登りを趣味にする層が広がった。老若男女が山を楽しんでいる。ただそうなってくると、問題も起きる。
－－問題？
太田 観光やレジャーの延長で山に登ってしまう。２０００メートル、３０００メートル級の山までその感覚で入ってきてしまう。
－－たとえば
太田 午後から登り始めて途中で暗くなってしまう。とくに冬は日没が早い。低山でもヘッドランプを持っていないと下山できない。それで「助けて」と救助の要請を出す。以前だったら山岳会や山岳部に入って経験のある先輩から登山の知識や技術を学んだ。だけどいまはいきなり個人でスッと入ってしまう。せいぜい山岳雑誌や登山の入門書を読む程度で、にわか登山者が多い。それでも天候などの条件が良いと登って無事に下りられる。愕然（がくぜん）とさせられたこともあります。
－－それはどんなことですか
太田 北アルプスの奥穂高岳（３１９０メートル）の山小屋で知り合った若い女性２人に「奥穂の前はどこに登ったの」と聞いたら「東京の高尾山（５９９メートル）。雑誌で見た奥穂高岳の景色がとてもきれいだったから高尾山の次にここに登った」と言うんです。低山に１回登っただけで３０００メートル級の山に来てしまう。段階を経ずに憧れの山にすぐ登ってしまう。自分の力量と山との関係が、まるで分かってない。
－－どうすればいいのでしょうか
太田 いまさらそういう人たちに「山岳会に入って登山を基礎から学びなさい」といっても無理。そこまでの覚悟で山を登っているわけではないのだから。そこで山岳ガイドによるツアー登山が必要になってくるのです。
－－日本山岳ガイド協会というのがあります
太田 会長が自民党前総裁の谷垣禎一さん。登山の指導者を育成することなどが目的で、これまでに約１千人がガイド資格を取っています。自分はガイド資格を与える検定員（試験官）をしている。協会はガイド資格を国家資格にするよう活動しています。

晋作は渡海する。が、曲折があった。 当初、藩政府（というよりも晋作が小姓（こしょう）としてつかえる世子・毛利定広）は、幕府が文久元（１８６１）年に欧州に派遣する使節団に晋作を随行させようとし、晋作もそれを熱望したが、「すでに定員」ということで、実現しなかった。 この「文久遣欧使節」の正使は、勘定奉行兼外国奉行の旗本、竹内保徳（やすのり）。目的は欧州各国を歴訪し、「両都両港開市開港延期交渉」と「日露国境画定交渉」をおこなうことだった。 幕府は安政５（１８５８）年、米英仏蘭露と「安政五か国条約」をむすんだ。この条約によって翌年、箱館（函館）・神奈川（横浜に変更）・長崎の３港が開港。これにつづいて江戸・大坂・新潟・兵庫（神戸）を順次、開港・開市してゆく予定だった。だが、日本国内における尊王攘夷熱の高まりと、かつて横井小楠（しょうなん）が晋作に説いた、開国（３港の先行開港）による物価高騰の混乱を受け、幕府は２市２港の開港の延期を各国に申し出ざるをえなくなったことが、両都両港開市開港延期交渉の背景にある。また、日露国境画定交渉の対象は樺太（からふと）だった。 後世からみれば、正使以下の面々は豪華絢爛（ごうかけんらん）の観がある。まず翻訳方として福沢諭吉がいた。さらにはのちの日本外交の重鎮で伯爵、元老院議長も務めることになる寺島宗則、通弁（通訳）方には明治ジャーナリズムの祖、福地桜痴（おうち）がいた。また、長州藩からは藩主・毛利慶親（よしちか）の小姓で、のちに宮中の要職を歴任することになる子爵、杉孫七郎が使節会計方の「使用人・新助」という名目で随行していた。 使節の旅程はまる１年間におよんだ。そして帰国した一行を待っていたのは、《我国の形勢は全く一変したり、幕府の政略は実に一転したるなり》（福地桜痴『懐往事談』）という時勢の激変だった。もし晋作が当初の希望通り「文久遣欧使節」に随行していたならば、晋作の運命とともに、その後の長州藩、ひいては幕末維新史は、かわっていたかもしれない。 「文久遣欧使節」が出航した翌日にあたる、同じ年の１２月２３日、晋作に「世子小姓役を一時免じ、航海術修業のため他国に出国するよう」、そして「公儀（幕府）が支那国（中国・清）に派遣する使節に随行するように」という命がもたらされた。一行のむかう先は上海。出発は翌年４月下旬だが、晋作は年明け早々にも出航の港・長崎へと旅立つことになった。
